Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are often the first thing people notice about us and often the first thing we look at in the mirror both in the morning and late at night. Therefore, they hold a special place in our own personal interpretation of beauty. Typically, in the late 30s, 40s and early 50s our eye area undergoes some significant changes. These changes can make our Brows heavy, our upper eyelids saggy, our crow’s feet area look wrinkled and our lower eyelid area look baggy and tired.

Thankfully, modern plastic surgery has an approach for all these aging signs.

Surgery for the brow, upper eyelid and lower eyelid are commonly performed at Adam Goodwin surgery. Eyelid surgery is one of our most popular surgical choices. The results are predictable and have a very high rate of satisfaction. Treatment of the eye area is typically divided into upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery with brow surgery a third treatment less often requested.

Initial Consultation

At your first consultation you will be able to discuss what you see in the mirror and how it affects you. The most common presentation is one of looking tired despite being well rested. Sometimes eyelid heaviness can be so severe that it causes functional problems while driving or looking sideways. Your entire face will be assessed with specific focus on the eye area. The movement of the forehead, symmetry of the brow and upper eyelid skin and fatty tissue itself is all relevant.

When considering the lower eyelid, the eye bags tear trough and cheek position are also all examined. You will receive a complete and thorough assessment of your facial anatomy.

Surgical Treatment

Upper eyelid heaviness or sagging skin is straightforward to treat. This is typically a local anaesthetic operation lasting between 45 minutes and an hour. In terms of an experience, many people say it’s no worse than a simple dental check-up. No worse. The heavy skin of the upper eyelid is removed leaving a fine scar in the natural lid crease. The scar becomes very well hidden and faint over time leaving an excellent cosmetic result showing a much fresher brighter look. It is reassuring to know that upper eyelid surgery is an operation where people rarely notice what the difference is, only the difference itself.

Lower eyelid surgery tends to be more involved. Surgery for eyebags and a fallen cheek typically requires general anaesthetic and one night stay in hospital. This is because the treatment not only concentrates on the bagging skin but also the weak muscle of the lower eyelid and the fallen cheek volume. Lower eyelid surgery almost always includes a mid-facelift to refresh the whole midface and to treat the tear trough deformity. The scar is extremely neatly placed immediately under that eyelash which gives an excellent cosmetic result. Recovery is a little longer than upper eyelid surgery as the surgery is more extensive involving multiple layers of the face. Swelling bruising and a little bit of tugging on the lower eyelid are common lasting typically at least 1 to 2 weeks and occasionally longer.

Recovery

Recovery from upper eyelid surgery typically involves swelling and bruising which lasts approximately one week. Lower eyelid surgery tends to show signs 2 to 3 weeks later. It is important to plan your work and personal life around the recovery. For lower eyelid surgery eyedrops are often required to lubricate the cornea as surgical treatment of the lower eyelid tends to result in stiffness when trying to close the eye especially in the early phases. It will be kept under regular review and talked through the process in detail.

Return to normal

You should expect to return to normal activity within 10 to 14 days following upper eyelid surgery and between two and four weeks following lower eyelid surgery. For every person who follows the average path, there is one who is noticeably faster and one who is slower. Please be aware that this is all normal. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will happily guide you through the process.

Is eyelid surgery right for me.

Although eyelid rejuvenation surgery is typically for those around the fourth decade, it is not that unusual to treat people in their 20s and people in their 70s or 80s. If you think that sagging upper or lower eyelids is a problem from which you suffer, please contact us here at Adam Goodwin surgery. Consultations are free and we can give you a broad overview of how your eye area may be improved by surgery or non-surgical techniques.

Will I look natural?

The results from upper and lower eyelid surgery are typically extremely natural. The goal of surgery is to reverse the aging process alone. Neither operation is designed to make you look any different than you did when younger. The scars are extremely well hidden and very difficult to find. As a result, eyelid surgery has a very high degree of satisfaction with a very soft pleasing result overall.
